Barra, Inhambane: Beaches, Lodges & Diving (2026)

Folha de Inhambane Last updated: Jul 15, 2026

A guide to Barra Beach, Inhambane: long sandy beaches, mangroves, kitesurfing, diving and how it compares with neighbouring Tofo.

Just north of Tofo, where the Inhambane peninsula meets the sea, Barra is a long, dune-backed beach known for its calm, upmarket feel. Where Tofo is lively and social, Barra is spacious and serene — a favourite for couples, families and watersports lovers.

The beach and the peninsula

Barra sits on a slim peninsula where the ocean meets a maze of tidal flats and one of the largest mangrove estuaries on this coast. At low tide you can walk for kilometres on near-empty sand; at high tide the lagoon is perfect for paddling and kayaking. A landmark lighthouse marks the tip of the peninsula.

Diving and snorkelling

Barra shares the same rich waters as Tofo. Its reefs are known for seahorses, nudibranchs and pipefish — a macro photographer's dream — alongside the mantas, whale sharks and turtles the region is famous for. The estuary is also a great spot for gentle snorkelling and spotting birdlife.

Kitesurfing and watersports

Steady side-shore winds and a big, shallow lagoon make Barra one of the best kitesurfing spots in Mozambique. There are schools for beginners and open water for the experienced, plus stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and horse riding along the beach.

Barra vs Tofo: which to choose?

Choose Barra for space, calm and comfortable lodges away from the crowds. Choose Tofo for a lively town, budget options, nightlife and walk-everywhere convenience — see things to do in Tofo and where to stay in Tofo. The two are only about 30–40 minutes apart, so many visitors combine them.
